How to Manage Storage Zones for a Location
Storage zones let you organize a location's physical space into named areas (e.g., "Back Room", "Aisle 3", "Cold Storage"). They are used during inventory receiving to direct stock to the correct area.
Opening Storage Zone Management
- Open the location for editing (Program → Locations → double-click)
- Click the Manage Storage Zones button at the bottom of the form
This opens the Storage Zones management screen for the selected location.
What Are Storage Zones?
A storage zone is a named area within a location. Examples:
- Retail stores: "Sales Floor", "Back Room", "Display Window"
- Warehouses: "Aisle A", "Aisle B", "Receiving Dock", "Overflow"
- Restaurants: "Dry Storage", "Walk-in Cooler", "Bar"
Using Storage Zones with Receiving
Once storage zones are set up, they work with the Receiving tab settings on the Location form:
- Default Receiving Zone — newly received inventory is automatically suggested to go to this zone
- Require Zone Selection — forces staff to pick a zone for every receive
- Allow Override — lets staff change the suggested zone
- Overflow to Unassigned — items that don't match a routing rule go to an "Unassigned" area
When to Use Storage Zones
Storage zones are optional. They are most useful for:
- Locations with multiple distinct storage areas
- Businesses that need to track where inventory is physically stored
- Warehouse operations with organized aisle and shelf systems
- Locations that receive large shipments and need to route stock efficiently
If your location is a small retail store with one back room, you may not need storage zones.
