Slideshow Design Tips and Content Strategy
Effective digital signage content is designed for the viewing context — people who are passing by or waiting briefly, not sitting down to read. This article provides best practices for designing slides that communicate clearly and look professional.
Duration Recommendations
The right slide duration depends on the content type:
- Simple messages (brand logo, short headline): 5-8 seconds.
- Product promotions with price and details: 10-15 seconds.
- Informational slides with body text: 12-20 seconds.
- Video backgrounds: Use the "Play Until Video Ends" option and match the slide duration to the video length.
Avoid durations shorter than 5 seconds — viewers may not have time to read the content. Avoid durations longer than 30 seconds for non-video slides — extended static content can appear frozen or broken.
Background Guidelines
- Solid colors work best for text-heavy slides. They are clean, load instantly, and keep the text readable.
- Images should be high resolution. Use at least 1920x1080 for Full HD displays. Low-resolution images look blurry when scaled up.
- Use the background overlay opacity when placing text over images. A value of 0.3-0.5 darkens the image enough to make white text legible.
- Keep backgrounds simple. Busy backgrounds compete with text for attention. If the background image has many details, increase the overlay opacity.
Color and Contrast
- White text on dark backgrounds is the most readable combination for digital displays viewed from a distance.
- Avoid light text on light backgrounds or dark text on dark backgrounds. The player renders text at the exact colors you specify with no automatic contrast adjustment.
- Limit your color palette to 2-3 colors per slide for a clean, professional look.
- Use your brand colors consistently across slides for visual cohesion.
Font Selection
- Sans-serif fonts (like Segoe UI, Arial, or Calibri) are easier to read on screens from a distance.
- Avoid decorative or script fonts for primary text. They reduce readability at a glance.
- Be consistent. Use the same 1-2 fonts across all your slides for a unified look.
- Size matters. Headlines should be at least 48pt, subheadings at least 32pt, for screens viewed from 3+ meters.
Logo and QR Code Tips
- Place the logo consistently in the same corner across all slides in a playlist. This creates brand recognition.
- Do not make the logo too large. 80-150 pixels is appropriate for most layouts.
- Test QR codes from the actual viewing distance before deploying. A QR code that works when you hold your phone next to the screen may be unscannable from 3 meters away.
- Always include a QR label (e.g., "Scan to Order") so viewers know what they will get.
Tags and Notes for Organization
Use slide tags and notes to organize your content library:
- Tag slides by campaign (e.g., "summer-2026", "holiday").
- Tag slides by content type (e.g., "menu", "promo", "brand").
- Use notes to record when a slide was last reviewed or what promotion it supports.
Tags make it easy to find related slides when building playlists, especially as your content library grows.
Content Rotation Strategy
Rotate your signage content regularly to keep it fresh:
- Weekly: Update pricing slides if prices change.
- Bi-weekly: Rotate at least 2-3 slides in your primary playlist.
- Monthly: Review all active playlists and retire stale content.
- Seasonally: Create new seasonal slides and archive the previous season.
Stale content that stays on screen for weeks loses its impact. Customers stop noticing slides they have seen many times.
