Choosing Between Standard and Compact POS Screens

Choosing Between Standard and Compact POS Screens

AccuArk offers two POS screen layouts. This article helps you decide which one is best for your business.

Standard POS — Best For

  • Desktop computers with full-size monitors (1280×800 or larger)
  • Experienced staff who want all buttons visible at once
  • Complex transactions that frequently use advanced features (serial tracking, invoice notes, gas pumps)
  • Keyboard-heavy workflows where staff type more than they touch
  • Businesses with many payment types where seeing Cash, Card, and Other buttons side by side is helpful

Compact POS — Best For

  • Touch-screen terminals and tablets with smaller displays
  • Simple retail environments where most transactions are scan-and-pay
  • New staff who benefit from a cleaner, less cluttered interface
  • Customer-facing environments where a modern, professional look matters
  • Countertop kiosks with limited space

How to Switch Between Modes

  1. Go to Program → POS Machine Settings (or click Machine Settings in the POS status bar Action menu)
  2. Open the POS Settings tab
  3. Under the Screen Behavior subtab, check or uncheck "Use Compact POS Screen"
  4. Click Save
  5. Restart the POS screen for the change to take effect

Important: This setting is per machine. You can have some machines using Standard POS and others using Compact POS in the same location.

Feature Availability

Both screen modes have access to the same features. The only difference is how they are organized:

  • In Standard POS, all actions have dedicated buttons on screen
  • In Compact POS, less-used actions are grouped under the "More" menu

No functionality is lost when switching to Compact mode.
