How to Hold and Resume (Unhold) a Sale
The Hold feature lets you temporarily pause a sale so you can serve another customer, then come back to the original sale when you're ready.
Common Scenarios
- A customer forgot their wallet and needs to go to their car
- A customer wants to add something and needs to go back to the store floor
- You need to price-check an item before continuing
- The customer steps away to take a phone call
How to Hold (Pause) a Sale
Standard POS:
- During an active sale with items in the grid, click the Hold button (or press Ctrl+H or F6)
- If no customer is attached, a dialog asks you to enter a name for the held sale (so you can find it later)
- The sale is saved with an "On Hold" status
- The screen clears and you can start a new sale for the next customer
Compact POS:
- Click the Hold button in the action grid
- Enter a name if prompted
- The sale is held
How to Resume (Unhold) a Sale
Standard POS:
- When the original customer returns, click the Unhold button (or press Ctrl+U or F7)
- A dialog shows all sales currently on hold at your location
- Select the sale you want to resume
- The sale loads back into the POS grid with all items and prices intact
- Continue the sale as normal (add more items, process payment, etc.)
Compact POS:
- Click the Unhold button in the action grid
- Select the held sale from the list
- Continue the sale
Manager Authorization
If the "Hold/Unhold Requires Manager Authorization" setting is enabled in Machine Settings:
- A Manager Authorization dialog appears when you try to hold or unhold a sale
- A manager must enter their credentials to approve the action
- This prevents unauthorized use of the hold feature
Rules and Limitations
- You can only hold a sale that has items in the grid
- You cannot hold a sale that already has payments applied — the customer must either complete the payment or the payments must be voided first
- You need the Hold Transaction permission
- Multiple sales can be on hold at the same time
- Held sales remain available until they are resumed or cancelled
- The Hold button is disabled when the grid is empty
- The Unhold button is disabled when there are items in the grid (you must start with an empty sale to resume a held one)
Tips
- Always attach a customer or enter a descriptive name when holding a sale — this makes it much easier to find later
- Held sales are visible to all POS users at the same location
- If a held sale is no longer needed, you can resume it and then cancel it
