How to Open the Cash Drawer
The cash drawer can be opened automatically after certain payment types or manually when needed.
Manual Opening (No-Sale Open)
To open the cash drawer without processing a sale:
- Go to the Action Menu (bottom-left of the POS status bar)
- Click Open Cash Drawer
- The drawer opens
- The opening is logged in the shift activity
This is useful for:
- Making change for a customer
- Counting cash during a shift
- Adding starting cash
Automatic Opening After Payments
Your administrator can configure the cash drawer to open automatically when certain payment types are processed. These settings are in Machine Settings → Payments & Accounts → Payment Methods:
| Setting | When the Drawer Opens |
|---|---|
| Open Drawer on Cash | After a cash payment is completed |
| Open Drawer on Check | After a check payment is completed |
| Open Drawer on Credit | After a credit card payment is completed |
| Open Drawer on Debit | After a debit card payment is completed |
| Open Drawer on Online | After an online payment is completed |
| Open Drawer on Bank Transfer | After a bank transfer payment is completed |
| Open Drawer on Other | After any other payment type is completed |
Each setting can be turned on or off independently. For example, most businesses enable drawer opening for cash and check payments but leave it off for card payments.
Prerequisites
- A cash drawer must be physically connected to the POS machine (usually via the receipt printer)
- The cash drawer must be configured in Machine Settings → POS Settings → Hardware Configuration
- The drawer connection must be tested and working
Troubleshooting
If the drawer doesn't open:
- Check that the drawer cable is securely connected
- Verify the hardware settings in Machine Settings
- Use the Test function in Hardware Configuration to test the connection
- Check that the drawer is not physically locked (many drawers have a key lock)
