POS Tips and Best Practices
Here are tips to help you work faster and more accurately at the POS.
Speed Tips
- Use keyboard shortcuts — F11 for cash, F12 for card, F1 to focus the search box. These save seconds on every transaction that add up over the day.
- Enable Scanner Auto-Add Mode — In Machine Settings, turn on "Scanner Auto-Add Mode" so scanned items are added instantly without pressing Enter.
- Learn the barcode prefixes — Scanning CSTMR: barcodes and RWRD: cards lets you attach customers without typing.
- Set up amount shortcuts — Configure the 6 amount shortcut buttons in Machine Settings for your most common denominations.
Accuracy Tips
- Always verify the Total Due before processing payment — a quick glance prevents costly errors.
- Attach the customer before processing loyalty redemptions or credit card payments that require customer info.
- Use serial number capture for high-value items to ensure proper tracking and warranty records.
- Check the quantity after scanning — if an item is scanned twice accidentally, the quantity will be 2. Click the Qty cell to correct it.
Cash Handling Tips
- Count your drawer at check-in — Verify the opening amount matches what's actually in the drawer.
- Perform safe drops regularly — Don't let cash build up in the drawer during busy shifts.
- Count back change to the customer — It reduces errors and builds customer confidence.
- Run a Machine Balance Check periodically — Compare it to what's in the drawer to catch discrepancies early.
End-of-Day Tips
- Run the X-Report before counting your drawer — Use the expected cash amount as your target.
- Process all pending transactions before checking out — Don't leave sales in progress.
- Resume and complete or cancel any held sales — Held sales should not carry over between shifts.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Screen frozen? Press Ctrl+Alt+R to restore the UI.
- Payment declined? Ask for a different card or switch to cash. Don't process the same card repeatedly.
- Barcode not scanning? Try typing the number manually in the search box.
- Printer not working? Use the Test Printer button in Machine Settings to diagnose.
- POS seems slow? Restart the POS screen from the Action Menu.
Customer Service Tips
- Hold sales graciously — If a customer needs to step away, use Hold and serve the next customer. The first customer won't have to start over when they return.
- Email receipts — Offer to email the receipt. It's faster than printing and environmentally friendly.
- Price check without adding — Use the Price Check feature to answer customer questions without affecting the sale.
